These colour names are useful when you are replacing an existing board or asking a supplier for a familiar material. A cabinet maker may ask for green MDF board; an interior contractor may ask for red MDF board. Here is how to turn those requests into a practical material choice.
Compare red and green MDF by the application
| Buying question | Red MDF | Green MDF |
|---|---|---|
| Common functional grade | Fire retardant MDF, also called FR MDF | Moisture resistant MDF, also called MR MDF |
| Typical starting point | Interior wall panels, ceilings, fit-out and furniture with a fire requirement | Kitchen cabinets, bathroom furniture and humid-interior joinery |
| Main selection detail | Required fire classification and finished panel construction | Moisture exposure, board grade, surface and edge protection |
| Appearance after finishing | The red core may be covered by paint, veneer or another face | The green core may be covered by paint, melamine or another face |
| Helpful sample | The board with representative facing and machining | The board with a cut edge, profile and intended finish |
Red MDF: choose a fire-retardant board
Red MDF / Fire Rated MDF uses a fire-retardant formulation. It gives furniture and interior manufacturers an MDF base that can be cut, routed and finished while meeting a specified material fire requirement. Red colouring helps identify the board during handling.
Start with the intended wall panel, ceiling, furniture part or display component. Then provide the fire class or project specification, panel thickness and exposed finish. For a faced panel, include the decorative layer and reverse; these form part of the finished construction.
If you search for fireproof MDF, ask for the required fire-retardant grade. Fire performance is described by the applicable classification; a wall or door's time rating belongs to its complete assembly. Our FR MDF guide explains which information to send for each kind of project.
Unilin identifies its fire-retardant MDF by a red core in its product range. This is a useful example of the colour convention, alongside the named product grade.
Green MDF: choose a moisture-resistant board
Green MDF / Moisture Resistant MDF is a common choice for kitchen cabinet components, bathroom furniture and other humid-interior joinery. Its moisture-resistant formulation improves its response to humidity compared with standard MDF.
Green core MDF may have green only in the core or throughout the section. The colour helps identify the grade in the workshop. The resin system and manufacturing process deliver the moisture performance. MEDITE explains both colour arrangements in its MR MDF technical FAQ.
Choose the complete component around its location. A cabinet side, a painted door and a panel beside a basin have different exposure and finishing needs. Finish cut edges, drilled openings and joints with the selected coating or edge system, and keep the furniture clear of standing water. Read Is MDF Waterproof? for choices involving splashes, repeated wetting or exterior exposure.
Where does HMR MDF fit?
High Moisture Resistant MDF, or HMR MDF, is another option for humid-interior furniture. Compare its stated moisture performance with MR MDF at the thickness you need. The useful comparison is the selected board and test result, alongside the component's finish and exposure.
For a kitchen range, list doors, carcass panels, end panels and sink-unit parts separately. For a vanity, include the basin position, pipe openings, wall clearances and visible edges. Our kitchen application page and bathroom furniture page help organize that choice.
When both moisture and fire performance matter
Put both requirements into the inquiry. Tell us where the panel will be used, the fire class, expected moisture exposure and decorative finish. We help review the available board and complete construction for the combined requirement. Keep the selected grade with the sample and quotation so purchasing and production use the same reference.
Functional colour or decorative colour?
Red and green also appear in decorative, through-coloured fibreboard ranges. If you want the colour to remain visible at cut edges or routed details, specify that appearance as well as any moisture or fire requirement. Black MDF shows how through-coloured material can be used as a design feature. A cross-section photo is helpful when you want us to match an existing board.
Buyer review checklist
- Intended component and indoor location.
- Red FR MDF, green MR MDF, HMR MDF or a decorative coloured board.
- Thickness, sheet size or finished-part dimensions, with quantities.
- Required finish, visible edges, holes and routed details.
- Moisture or fire requirement and destination.
- A board sample or photo, plus a drawing for machined parts.
