Fire rated MDF, fire retardant MDF and FR MDF are common purchasing terms for a flame-retardant MDF product. A request for fire resistant MDF needs the same specification detail: state whether the project concerns a material's reaction to fire or the timed performance of a complete wall, door or other assembly. That distinction helps your project team ask for the right information and lets our quotation describe the actual material supplied.

BSI's EN 13501-1 overview explains reaction-to-fire classification in relation to end use. ASTM's E84 scope describes surface-burning measurements and specimen support, while ASTM E119 concerns the fire performance of building elements during a specified exposure. Each method has its own criteria. Compare documents against the method your project names, with any equivalence accepted by the responsible project team.

Specify the bare board or the complete faced panel

Choose what you want to receive: bare FR MDF sheets, machined parts prepared for your finishing process, or a specified faced/coated panel. For an exposed finished surface, the MDF core, adhesive, decorative layer, reverse and edges form the construction to review. A board report and a finished-panel report can describe different products and end-use conditions. Keep the supply state clear in the quote, sample and document request.

Our input MDF capability spans 2–35 mm and the listed six sheet formats. The available FR thickness, density and format are selected with the applicable classification and document coverage. A general MDF production range describes factory capability; the order identifies the particular FR construction and its documented range. For a faced board, state core thickness and finished panel thickness separately, including the face, bond lines and reverse.

Ask for coverage of the exact combination. Where a classification permits a range or variation, its field of application establishes that range. A proposed change in thickness, facing, bonding, reverse, machining or mounting is checked against the applicable documentation and any further assessment the project requires. This gives your workshop a specification it can carry through finishing and installation.

What to look for in a fire declaration

A declaration, classification report and laboratory test report serve different purposes. The declaration identifies performance for a named product; the classification report records the class and field of application; supporting test reports describe the specimens, mounting, methods and results. Read them together when your project calls for that package, and retain any relevant installation instructions.

For a public reading example, MEDITE's CEDOP51 REV0 declaration dated 13 April 2026 identifies its own FR MDF and producer. Its declared scope shows why the product range and installation conditions belong beside the class.

Connect finishing and machining with the installed construction

The smooth FR MDF face gives your design a practical starting point for coating and decorative facing. Specify the finish as precisely as the core. For paint, identify primer, topcoat, application/build and the faces and edges covered. For HPL MDF, Melamine MDF, veneer or film, identify the actual face material, thickness, adhesive and reverse. We review the proposed FR core and finish as the complete panel you will receive, with the available document coverage.

Routing, grooving and perforation alter the part's geometry and exposed surfaces. Show the profile section, depth, radius, hole pattern, solid borders, remaining material and edge treatment in the drawing. The CNC processing page helps prepare these details. An acoustic-panel request also identifies the backing/absorber, cavity, frame and installation; fire and acoustic documents each address their own complete system.

For wall panels, send an elevation and section showing which face is exposed, the supporting wall or substrate, any battens/frame, cavity, insulation or backing, fixing method and joints. Include panel orientation, sizes, holes, penetrations and edge conditions. A substrate's material, thickness, density or fire classification may be specified by the report. A cavity or fixing choice can also be part of its permitted use. These details help your project team compare the designed wall with the documented construction.

Treat a requested 30- or 60-minute wall as an assembly specification. Its board layers, framing, joints, fixings and other components follow the applicable assembly documents and design. We supply the agreed panel and processing scope; the responsible designer or project reviewer determines suitability of the full installation. Use samples and receiving checks for their intended purpose

A sample helps your workshop assess cutting, profile detail, finish adhesion, appearance and assembly fit. Fire performance comes from the applicable fire testing and classification for the construction. Request a representative sample with the actual board reference and finish or machining you want to assess; keep its identity and supplied condition with the drawing and document package.

All product samples can be requested free of charge and are generally in stock. You cover the courier cost, which can be credited against a formal order. We confirm the available sample, custom preparation where needed, dispatch, courier cost and estimated transit time for your delivery address. A representative finished part is useful when the appearance or fit depends on coating, facing, routing or installation details.

Agree receiving and pre-shipment checks for thickness, dimensions, face and edge condition, machining, identification and packing. Nominal MDF thickness tolerance is ±0.1 mm; the selected FR grade, measuring method and any finished-panel/component tolerances are recorded in the order. Check document references against the board/part identity and specified construction. Red MDF is a familiar purchasing name for the red-coloured fire-retardant grade. You can arrange a third-party inspection before shipment. Inspection checks the agreed supply and packing; fire testing follows its laboratory method and specimen requirements. Retain bundle/part IDs, quantities, current drawings, samples and document revisions at receipt. Normal MOQ is 1 × 20'GP per specification. Normal production lead time is 3–10 days after the specification, required documents and commercial terms are confirmed. MDF board production capacity is 500 m³ per day across the factory. MDF cover boards, clean separators where needed, face/edge protection, wrapping, supports, controlled strapping and clear labels are selected for your sheets or parts.
