How does Paint Grade MDF differ from Sanded MDF?

Sanded MDF describes a prepared face for several downstream uses, including pressing and laminating. Paint Grade MDF is selected around a painted component and its entire preparation, primer and topcoat process, including the exposed edges.

Is paint grade MDF supplied already primed?

Not automatically. The quotation must state raw/sanded board, uncoated machined component, primed part or a specifically agreed finished coating. The term paint grade describes the intended substrate use.

Why can MDF edges need more preparation than faces?

Cutting and routing expose fibres that can absorb finishing materials differently from the compressed sanded face. A compatible edge sealer and preparation sequence help create an even starting surface before the final coating. Trial this with the selected system.

Can the same MDF be used for a flat panel and a routed door?

Review both components before choosing. A flat sample does not reveal deep-profile machining quality, exposed-core preparation or coating access in narrow areas. Use a routed sample at the planned thickness and depth.

What should a paint trial record?

Record board identity, thickness, machining, sanding and cleaning, sealer/primer and topcoat references, application and cure instructions, sample date and visual acceptance. Repeat the trial if a material or process change affects the approved result.

Does paint make standard MDF moisture resistant?
