HPL MDF Specifications
HPL MDF combines a separately manufactured high-pressure laminate sheet with an MDF core. Select the HPL finish, face thickness, reverse and edge construction for furniture and interior panels.

Choose the surface around the way it will be used
Give your furniture a finish that works as well as it looks. A reception counter sees repeated contact; a cabinet front brings colour and texture to the room. HPL MDF combines a separate high-pressure laminate face with an MDF core, so we can agree the decorative finish, surface grade, panel dimensions and machining for the component you are making.
Use the intended use to shortlist the HPL series. Then compare a physical sample in your room lighting and with the materials that meet its edges. For a desk or counter, request the surface data for horizontal use. For a furniture front, check the visible texture, gloss, pattern scale and the edge or corner detail. We keep the identified HPL reference with the sample and quote so your next order starts with the same finish.

Specify the HPL face, bond lines, MDF core and reverse
HPL face-sheet thickness is 0.5–1.2 mm. It describes the separate laminate sheet, including its own laminate layers. The finished HPL MDF panel also includes the MDF core, the adhesive bond lines and the reverse HPL or agreed balancing layer. State each part of the build-up, then add the finished thickness and tolerance your assembly requires.
A dimensional example uses an 18 mm MDF core with 0.8 mm HPL on each face. The nominal material-layer sum is 18 + 0.8 + 0.8 = 19.6 mm before bond-line thickness and production tolerances. This is a calculation for specifying the build-up. The supplied finished thickness is agreed and measured separately; the MDF core's nominal ±0.1 mm tolerance applies to the core.
For a single decorative face, choose the reverse with the face and bonding process. Matching decorative HPL, a different HPL finish or an agreed balancing construction can suit different components. Compare the surface properties for your selected HPL series
Abrasion, scratching and staining describe different demands on the finish. Abrasion concerns repeated surface wear; a scratch test concerns marking; stain testing assesses the surface after specified substances and contact conditions. Choose the result that matches your furniture use and keep the series, decor, texture and thickness with the data. A glossy finish and a deeply textured finish can have different specified results within a collection.
The following test references show the information to request for each quoted HPL series. Formica's published thin-laminate datasheet provides an example of these EN 438 test headings. Your order uses the data and document revision for the actual offered HPL. We state its applicable value or class when the series is selected.

A higher laminate thickness alone gives an incomplete picture of surface performance. Read the grade and test results with the intended application, then use a sample with your cleaning and workshop process. If another test standard is required for the destination or buyer specification, include it in the document request so the proposed series can be checked against that requirement.
Match fire-retardant supply to the complete panel
Fire-retardant HPL MDF options are available. Send the required classification and test standard with the furniture or installation drawing. We match the HPL grade, MDF core, adhesive, reverse and panel thickness to the applicable report. Keep the report number, issue date, covered construction and installation conditions with the quoted specification.
A laminate classification describes the scope in its document. For the finished panel, check the facing, substrate and bonding arrangement as a complete construction; EGGER's laminate-classification explanation describes how the adhesive and substrate affect the overall rating. The document for your order should identify the proposed construction and any conditions on its use.
Reaction to fire and a fire-resistance period are different procurement requirements. State which your project needs. A wall assembly requiring a resistance period also needs its specified fixing, joints and supporting construction. Make your colour, texture and edges work together
Choose or customize solid colours, woodgrains, stone and material effects, texture and gloss. Send a manufacturer or collection reference, a colour target or a physical sample. We agree the proposed HPL reference and finish using an identified sample, with pattern direction and scale shown on the panel layout. For repeat orders, keep that sample and its agreed appearance range with the quote.
Bring the edge band into the same sample review. Specify its material, thickness, colour, corner radius and whether it matches or contrasts with the face. The finished dimensions and drawing show how the edging, holes and any exposed routed areas meet. A machined sample lets your team assess the face, reverse, edge and hardware fit together.
For retail fixtures, identify part IDs and sets or pack groups. For office furniture, add the top support, cable openings and visible edges. Send the cut list or drawings for CNC machining or cut-to-size components, with finished dimensions and critical tolerances.

How does HPL MDF compare with Melamine MDF and Laminated MDF?
HPL MDF uses a separately manufactured laminate sheet bonded to the core. Melamine MDF uses resin-impregnated decor paper pressed directly onto the board. HPL MDF belongs to the broader Laminated MDF family. Choose between them by the finish, intended use, selected surface grade and budget; we can quote the construction that fits your project.
Can I customize the HPL colour and texture?
Yes. Choose solid colours, woodgrains, stone and material effects, textures and gloss levels, or send your own finish reference. We confirm the available or customized HPL against a physical sample so you can see the colour and feel the texture before ordering. Pattern scale and direction can also be agreed for your parts.
How wear resistant is HPL MDF?
The hard HPL face provides resistance to abrasion, scratches, stains and everyday wear. The actual performance depends on the chosen laminate series and grade. Tell us whether the panel will be a horizontal desk or counter, or a vertical furniture face; we help match the wear grade and technical data to that use.
Can I order fire-retardant HPL MDF?
Yes. Share the fire classification and test standard your project requires. We confirm a suitable HPL grade, MDF core and adhesive, together with the applicable test report for that complete panel construction. The report's covered thicknesses and configurations determine which option suits the project.
Can both sides have an HPL finish?
Yes. You can choose matching or different HPL finishes on the two faces. For a single decorative face, we agree a suitable reverse HPL or balancing layer with the face and adhesive to help balance panel stresses and support flatness.
Can HPL MDF be used in humid interiors?
For a protected interior with humidity or occasional splashes, we select the MDF core and facing construction for the actual conditions. Sealed edges, holes and joints, a suitable reverse face and protection from prolonged water contact are part of the finished component design.
